Phone & SMS

Getting a Phone Number

Claim a local number for SMS and calls — it takes less than 5 minutes.

1

What Kind of Number You Need

Jtek provides two types of phone numbers. Understanding the difference helps you pick the right one for your business.

  1. Local 10-digit numbers (10DLC) — A standard local phone number with an area code matching your market. These look like any number a local person might call from, which significantly increases answer rates.
  2. Toll-free numbers — Numbers with 800, 888, 877, etc. prefixes. These work well for national businesses and customer service lines, but have lower answer rates for cold outreach since they're associated with robocalls.
  3. For most local businesses, use a local number — If you're serving a local market, a local area code builds instant trust. Someone in Austin is far more likely to answer a 512 number than an 800 number.
  4. Local numbers support both SMS and voice calls — Your Jtek number handles inbound and outbound calls AND text messages from the same number. One number, two communication channels.
  5. You'll need A2P registration before sending SMS at volume — All US carriers require businesses sending SMS through a 10DLC number to complete A2P registration. See the A2P registration guide for details.
Tip: Pick an area code from the city where most of your clients are — not necessarily where your office is located. If you serve Dallas clients, get a 214 or 972 area code even if you're based nearby.

Adding a Number

Claiming a new phone number in Jtek takes about two minutes. You choose the area code, pick from available numbers, and it's yours instantly.

  1. Go to Settings in the left sidebar — Click the gear icon at the bottom of the navigation panel.
  2. Click "Phone Numbers" — This shows all numbers currently on your account. On first setup it will be empty.
  3. Click "+ Add Number" — A modal will appear asking for your desired area code.
  4. Enter your desired area code — Type the 3-digit area code (e.g., 512 for Austin, 310 for Los Angeles). Jtek will search for available local numbers matching that area code.
  5. Select a number and click Confirm — Pick any number from the list of available options. The number is assigned to your account immediately.

Tip: After adding your number, send yourself a test text message from Jtek to confirm it's working. Go to Conversations, start a new message, enter your personal cell number, and send a quick "test" from your new Jtek number.

Configuring Call Forwarding (Optional)

Call forwarding lets inbound calls to your Jtek number ring your personal or office phone simultaneously — so you never miss a call even when you're away from your computer.

  1. Go to Settings → Phone Numbers — Find your number in the list and click the edit (pencil) icon to open its settings.
  2. Find the "Call Forwarding" section — Scroll down within the number's settings panel until you see the Call Forwarding toggle.
  3. Toggle Call Forwarding ON — Once enabled, a field will appear asking for the forwarding number.
  4. Enter your cell number or office line — Type the number you want inbound calls forwarded to (e.g., your mobile). Include the country code if outside the US.
  5. Save and test — Call your Jtek number from another phone. Your mobile should ring. If it doesn't, double-check the forwarding number was saved correctly.
Tip: Call forwarding is optional — many Jtek users handle all calls directly from the Conversations inbox or the mobile app. If you prefer to answer from your regular phone, forwarding is the way to go.

Setting Your Caller ID Name

CNAM (Caller ID Name) is the business name that displays on the recipient's phone when you call them. Setting this correctly builds trust and improves answer rates.

  1. Go to Settings → Phone Numbers — Click the edit icon on your number to open its settings.
  2. Find the "Caller ID Name" or "CNAM" field — This is usually near the top of the number settings.
  3. Enter your business name — Keep it under 15 characters (the CNAM standard limit). Use your most recognizable name (e.g., "Jtek", "Riverside Realty", "Oak St Dental").
  4. Save the setting — CNAM updates can take 24–72 hours to propagate across carriers. Your name may not display on all carriers immediately after saving.
  5. Note: CNAM display varies by carrier — Some carriers always show the number, others always show the CNAM. There's no guarantee 100% of recipients will see your business name, but setting it correctly gives you the best chance.
Tip: Avoid abbreviations or acronyms that are hard to recognize. "RVRSDE RLTY" is worse than just "Riverside" — use whatever name is most familiar to your clients.

Adding More Numbers

You can have multiple phone numbers on your Jtek account — one per team member, one per ad campaign, or one per market you serve.

  1. Repeat the Add Number process for each additional number — Go to Settings → Phone Numbers → + Add Number and follow the same steps. Each number can have its own area code.
  2. Assign numbers to team members — In your team member settings, you can designate which Jtek number each person calls and texts from. This keeps communications organized by person.
  3. Use separate numbers for ad campaigns — If you run multiple ad sources (Facebook, Google, postcards), assign a different Jtek number to each. Tracking which number gets the most calls tells you which source is working.
  4. Route numbers to different automations — Inbound calls to different numbers can trigger different workflows. A call to your Facebook ad number can automatically start a "Facebook Lead" follow-up sequence.
  5. Each number has its own settings — Voicemail greeting, call forwarding, CNAM, and recording settings are all configured independently per number. Check each number's settings after adding it.
Tip: Name your numbers descriptively in Jtek (e.g., "Jesse's Cell Line", "Facebook Ads Number", "Website Chat Number"). This makes it easy to identify which number is which when reviewing call logs.
